Drivers of 59 car models face steep road tax hikes
by Pete Gavan, Abbie Wightwick, James Rodger · DevonLiveDrivers of luxury and high-performance vehicles are set to be hit with a significant increase in vehicle excise duty, with 59 cars now confirmed to face a £2,000 hike.
Those owning new models emitting over 255g/km of CO2 will see the charge rocket by a staggering £2,745, taking it up to £5,490 per year. This change is set to take effect from April 2025.
While the general road tax rate will rise at the rate of inflation, cars emitting more than 75g of CO2 per kilometre purchased after this date will be subject to significantly higher taxes. In an aggressive push, first-year road tax rates for higher CO2 bands will double, which could inject an additional £400m into treasury coffers next year, and amount to £1.7bn by 2030, Birmingham Live has reported.
The budget briefing document acknowledged issues with the current system, particularly for zero-emission vehicles: "The government recognises the disproportionate impact of the current VED Expensive Car Supplement threshold for those purchasing zero-emission cars and will consider raising the threshold for zero-emission cars only at a future fiscal event, to make it easier to buy electric cars.", reports Wales Online.
